Welcome to my book blog. I am a writer, editor, educator, musician, and small business owner. I have been
innkeeping at my bed and breakfast in Louisville KY for the past 17 years. I am passionate about women's issues, the arts, and life in general...and I love to blog. I'm working on a memoir now and have been trying to start reading more and reviewing books that appeal to me. I want to get back to reading memoirs again, as I'm in the throes of re-writing mine. Any suggestions for memoirs written by creative, adventurous and strong women will be more than appreciated. I love Ruth Reichl's books. She writes, as I do about people and food, as does Maya Angelou.
I hope you enjoy your visit.

Hello Nancy, I'm here from She Writes. I just watched the James Patterson video about getting children to read - interesting. Thanks for posting it.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed my visit. Have a good week.
Hi Nancy! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Both of your sites look great, and your memoir sounds interesting. I admire anyone taking on that task. I think it's much harder than fiction.
ReplyDeleteHi Helen...thanks for stopping by my blog...and nice to meet you. Glad you enjoyed the video. I stopped by your site also and really enjoyed a look around.
ReplyDelete@Stacey. I have always thought writing fiction to be much harder than writing memoir. In fact, I wrote a long article about it on my Memorable Time blog...don't know if you got a chance to see it. I have very specific reasons why I think fiction is harder and more tedious...and don't forget you have to have a well developed imagination. I tend to look at memoir in the same way I do blogging...to me, it's very personal
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy - good to hop with you again :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting the sign video; the saying at the end was very poignant and applicable to so many aspects of life!
Hey Shelly, good to see you again. So glad you go to see one of my other blogs and enjoy the sign video. I thought it was pretty amazing.
ReplyDeleteHi Marcia, thanks for stopping by my blog. Yes I am very busy but doing things I love to do, which makes me very happy. I will definitely visit you soon.
ReplyDeleteHello Nancy - stopping by from the She Writes Blog Hop. Love your blog and need to remember to visit more often. I will add it my Google Reader now.
ReplyDeleteHello Nancy - I left a comment last time I stopped by in the She Writes blog hop and I'm here again to say hello. I love Maya Angelou but haven't read Ruth Reichl's books so I'll look them out. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteHello and howdy doody. Just popping by from She Writes, and noticed your link to your blog. Enjoyable! Just got out of surgery, so can't sit for long (or stand for that matter! LOL) but had to read a few of your entries. Enjoyed my visit here. I figured, since you asked, to add my recommendation to your reading list by suggesting Stephen King's "On Writing". He's not only hilarious, but I have taken what he teaches to heart. Have a great weekend, Nancy.
ReplyDeleteHello Nancy! I'm taking a moment to greet those who've joined the blog hop, of course, using this time to catch up on blogs I've clearly missed! I'll visit your Goodreads shelf to read more on your book selections.
ReplyDeleteHelen, Thanks for stopping by again. Yes, do check out Reichl's book, especially Comfort Me With Apples. She was a food critic for years and is a wonderful writer.
ReplyDeleteS.L. Thanks for the nice comments. I will definitely have to check out Steven King's book. I've heard that it is very funny, and I can use all the help I can get with my memoir, especially from a seasoned writer like King. This is the first time I have tried to write something longer than a journal article.
ReplyDeleteThanks RYCJ, Happy to have you stop by. Hope you find something interesting on my Goodreads Shelf. I'm looking for interesting and humorous memoirs to read that incorporate food into stories about interacting with people. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteOff the top of my head, I think you might really appreciate 'The Kitchen Sink Papers' by Mike McGrady. Really good book, and oh my so funny. (It's about a husband who leaves his career as a journalist for after many years to become a househusband while his wife launches her career. In addition to many things house-related, he does cover food, which decreases as his chores pick up). I think you'll like it. I loved it!!!
ReplyDeleteStopping by on the blog ball, and it sounds like you're busy!
ReplyDeleteI'm also from the blogger's ball and this is a nice post to get to know you. I wish you the best in your B&B and in re-writing that memoir.
ReplyDelete@homecomingbook: Yes, I certainly am...but I love it!
ReplyDeleteHi Myne, Glad you stopped by. And thanks so much for the well wishes. I can use all I can get.
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy! I love the varied picks your book club has made and if you haven't seen the film adaptation of "The Help" yet, I highly recommend it; I went in very skeptical that it'd be able to do justice to the emotional undercurrent of the many stories...and then walked out without a single dry tissue left ;)
ReplyDeleteHello Nancy. Two memoirs I loved, both by strong adventurous women, are "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls and "Lit" by Mary Carr. I have have a book I am about to start reading that looks really good: The Situation and the Story: The Art of Personal Narrative by Vivian Gornick.I look forward to your reviews!
ReplyDeleteShelley, Thanks for stopping by my site again. Glad there was something that was interesting to you. I am dying to see the movie "The Help" but my B&B is so busy right now, I don't have a moment to get out.
ReplyDelete@Carol,
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate your leaving the names of two memoirs I can sink my teeth into. And the other book sounds exactly like something I would find useful. Personal narrative is such an art in itself; any more I can learn about it will be extremely welcomed.
Hi Nancy! I'm always looking for new thrillers to read and other thriller writers, so I'm going to check out your Goodreads group. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Stacy, Hope you find something thrilling lol.I appreciate the memoir book suggestions you left me...thanks
ReplyDeleteInterested in books by women. Not interested in books by men? So much for gender neutrality. So much for equality.
ReplyDeleteAnd they have to be "strong" women. So just like men have always insisted men have to be strong, now women are adopting the same posturing. Does that mean women will get the same condemnation and criticism?
Might it be better to be real? And to open to good reads regardless of the author's gender?
